1964 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe: A Reimagined Masterpiece

When you think of vintage cars that have left a lasting impact on automotive history, the Jaguar E-Type is undoubtedly one of the first names to come to mind. Known for its stunning curves and timeless design, the E-Type has become synonymous with beauty and performance. But what if we told you that one California-based company, Canepa, has taken this legendary car and reimagined it for the modern era?

The History Behind the E-Type Low Drag Coupe

Unveiled at the 1961 Geneva Auto Show, the Jaguar E-Type was initially hailed as the successor to the D-Type. However, while its looks were impeccable, the E-Type wasn’t as aerodynamic as it could have been for peak performance. In 1963, Jaguar decided to fix this by creating the Lightweight E-Type—a special version of the car made entirely of aluminum, with only 12 original units ever produced. Over the years, Jaguar would go on to build additional versions, but the real magic happened when three of these Lightweight models were further modified to become the E-Type Low Drag Coupe, designed to give the car a competitive edge on the racetrack.

While all three Low Drag Coupes had unique features, it was the No. 49FXN variant that became the reference car for Canepa’s recreation. This model, with its sleek body and performance enhancements, would become the blueprint for their stunning reimagining of the Jaguar E-Type.

Canepa’s Masterful Recreation

California-based Canepa is well-known for its meticulous restorations and customizations of vintage vehicles, particularly Porsches. But their latest project—a reimagined 1964 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe—is a true work of art.

Marco Diaz, the mind behind Canepa’s recreation, began the process by gathering an incredible wealth of archival materials, including original blueprints, rare photographs, and documents. Additionally, Diaz had the invaluable help of Dr. Samir Klat, an aerodynamicist who was part of the original Jaguar design team. Together, they set to work crafting two cars: a left-hand-drive street version (OWL226) and a U.K.-spec racer (13FXN), which now resides at Goodwood.

The result? A beautifully reimagined E-Type Low Drag Coupe that debuted at the 2019 Quail Motorsports Gathering and garnered widespread praise.

A Modern Classic

The OWL226 is now available for sale by Canepa, with just 776 miles on the odometer. This recreation maintains the original spirit of the 1964 model, but with a few key upgrades that elevate it to a modern-day masterpiece. The car is finished in a stunning titanium gray metallic exterior and features a one-of-a-kind blue leather interior that adds to its luxurious feel.

Under the hood, the Canepa reimagined E-Type is powered by a 3.8L inline-six engine that produces a whopping 380 horsepower—far surpassing the original’s 261hp. The engine, handcrafted by Ed Pink Racing Engines in Southern California, includes precision components from Croswaithe & Gardiner. To complete the car’s performance package, the chassis and suspension were crafted with expert care by RS Panels, and the car rides on custom Koni shocks and 15-inch magnesium wheels. Additionally, the switches inside the car are salvaged from old RAF fighter planes, adding a unique touch to this already incredible vehicle.

He will tell you he spent a year designing the gauge cluster, and another year working on the emblems and badging. And finally, the switchgear was sourced as NOS parts from a 1960s Royal Air Force Vulcan bomber. It took eight years to conquer the past, to gift it to an admiring present and a grateful future.

Why It Matters

Canepa’s reimagining of the Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe isn’t just about taking a legendary car and giving it a modern twist—it’s about preserving automotive history while pushing the boundaries of performance and design. The result is a stunning machine that honors the spirit of the original while showcasing the very best of modern engineering.

Whether you’re an automotive enthusiast or simply a fan of beautiful design, the Canepa 1964 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe is a car that deserves to be seen, appreciated, and admired. If you’re lucky enough to own it, you’ll be driving a true work of art—one that combines history, craftsmanship, and innovation in perfect harmony.
